Unfortunately, this is still a sensitive topic in many countries and I think it's great that we can discuss such issues here in a friendly environment
(though you have to go and vote for the right people in your countries to make a change ).
When it comes to rights of homosexuals in different countries, I like to refer to this splendid wiki page :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_by_country_or_territory
I have lived in Germany, Spain and Denmark who all have over short or long abolished all suppression of homosexuals, although you will always find individuals who are not open to anything. Of those only Denmark has compulsory military service, but there are so many volunteers, that they usually don't force anyone into the service.
In a few months, I will visit Russia for the first time and my impression even towards foreigners (e.g. during the Olympics in Sochi 2014) is rather bad from the political side. The people I have met are great and more open minded than their leaders and protectors are.
Once I had a prvt saying something like "let's walk hand in hand through the city (SPB) sight-seeing", only to learn that this would get us into trouble. I appreciated the honesty, but it did make me sad .
A similar topic has been raised before, if you want to have a look it got good response and I hope, yours will too.
