I have vowed to return each year at that time in which the spirits are at their most malevolent and powerful. To give you my support and succor. Such as it is. Even though the trials of each year take more and more of me to that great beyond. And I feel the grips of sanity and memory grow more and more feeble as my mental fingers wither.

Oh I wish I could retreat to an early grave. Lounge around in my reward well earned golden years in a plush casket. But your irresponsible and dangerous manner of living f0rces me to worry and fret. To pull my very hair out in worry. All that my generation and the previous have accomplished are threatened by your unsteady hands wobbling upon the tiller.

I must say that it makes my bl00d boil and my step grow as jaunty as any spring chicken to contemplate glorious war upon the spirit world! So in truth I feel my duty light as I go once again into the breach!

The calvary is here. You can uncircle the wagons.

The shrieking, wickering fiends can no longer shoot electricity into your walls with impunity. Their ability to cross river, pentagram, and all manner of herbs potent has been revoked by mountie spell.

Kneel servants of Satan to the crimson acolyte of the All Powerful. There is balm in Gilead. The snake is trod underfoot.

I have gone into the desert near Tuba City and performed the Sun Dance. Barbs ripping skin and hunger wracking body.

I have seen a series of sacred visions. I have druunk deep of the mystical peyote.

Verily I say unto you... nothing exists on this plane... now... save matters material and flesh corruptible. In an intense explosion of bright white light all beings from the other realties were exiled... were banished... leaving nothing in all this reality but dull, corporeal solid objects describable by the most straightforward object orientated code.

You have more than my testimony on this matter. You have the northern lights. The mounties' message to humanity. Tinged with a special hue this year.

And so I settle in on a vigil. To guard that which I have preempted. With watchful eyes merely patrolling this plane for border crossers. The long lone patrol that is little different from the standard duty in the North Woods.

And while I watch I may spin my tales. Palaver. Company keeps off the dread spirits. Your night troubles get relief from mountie coffee and campfire lore.

Sleeep. Or sit on vigil around the fire. Rest. Or add your voice to the choir. The nights will pass and the next calm time will begin. The snows of winter will close the passes once again and man will hunker down in his warm lodgements once again.

Any shrieking will be the desperate sounds of tardy spirits making a last ditch effort to penetrate our mortal coil. They have been wrong footed. They have lost initiative.

I rise in the morning with the hunger and boundless energy of all my kindred spirits and prosperity wielding ancestors. My keen eye turns to industry and mastery of my environment.

I can hear the guttural snores of lazy spirits. They can only flit about in the wee hours of the night. They get hangovers something fierce and they cannot stand even the weaker winter sun. They have no power over their environment. They cannot build. Cannot dream. Cannot strive.

I snap their ethereal underwear in contempt! I'd give them a good clout with dueling glove if it didn't just pass through their wispy protuberances. That they should presume to rule any of us is an outrage!

They only fright by their resemblance to past men. In their natural form they are as impotent as slugs.

Death now regularly visits me. He has come into my inner circle and drawn away the most close. He sits and grins at me from the corner. Teasing me that I know the manner that it must come. If not the time.

He is not the best company. To be sure. But I've had worse. At least he doesn't belch nor fart. He doesn't whine. Doesn't nag. It is kind of touching how he hangs about hoping that he gets to carry me off soon.

So do not bother me with tales of haints and cold spots in rooms. I would gladly take the bargain of a temporary existence in which I can do much than an eternal existence in which I only cause chills and movement of air. The most interesting and significant creatures are me and my ilk.

Ah the late October sun is strong and good here. I am just soaking it up. And even the scene right outside my door is rich in detail and life. My kind of Halloween.

The vigil is at end. The long patrol is ended.

The spirits yield up their temporary time of power. Here in the West later than most.

Keen mountie eyes play over the flat moonlit plain of our local geometry, They are restless. Only kept for a time in camp and palaver.

Lessons have been taught. Fortunes made. The wheel has turned another clock and the world has moved on.

It will not always be with this species of eyes that the plain is viewed. But I think that it will never be surrendered to elements ethereal.
